Can Chocolate Prevent Wrinkles?

The day I heard chocolate may prevent wrinkles and skin ageing was the day I felt all my prayers had been answered. Can chocolate actually prevent wrinkles? As it turns out, certain compounds in chocolate have been shown to slow the ageing process and reduce wrinkle formation.

Chocolate is rich in a compound called flavanols. Flavanols are a type of polyphenol with antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the body's cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and lead to cellular damage and ageing. In the skin, oxidative stress can cause collagen and elastin fibres to break down, which can lead to wrinkles and other signs of ageing.

Flavanols are also known to improve blood flow, increase hydration levels in the skin and improve skin density. Increased blood flow allows more oxygen and nutrients to enter the skin, while increased hydration and density can help plump and tighten the skin while creating a youthful complexion.

Polyphenols have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, leading to wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Some studies have also noted that these compounds can protect the skin from UV damage.

 

When consuming chocolate, it’s always best to opt for dark chocolate with higher percentages of cacao. Or, better yet, substitute the chocolate for pure cacao powder or cacao nibs.

Eating chocolate in moderation as part of a balanced diet may offer some benefits, but excessive consumption can lead to weight gain and other health problems. Additionally, using sun protection, moisturising regularly, and avoiding smoking are important steps in preventing wrinkles and maintaining healthy skin.
