Managing PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common female reproductive disorder characterised by small cysts forming on the edges of enlarged ovaries.

The cause of PCOS isn't well understood, however, diagnosis is usually determined by the presence of 2 of 3 criteria; irregular periods, excess androgens or polycystic ovaries detected via ultrasound.

The most common symptom of PCOS is irregular periods, however several other symptoms may be experienced such as;

  • Prolonged and/or painful periods

  • Excessive facial and/or body hair

  • Acne and oily skin

  • Hair loss or thinning

  • Weight gain

  • Fatigue

  • Mood swings

  • Sleep apnoea

  • Blood sugar imbalances

  • Infertility

Thankfully, through a healthy diet, lifestyle and supportive therapies, many of these symptoms can be managed.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the levels of circulating androgens, specifically testosterone, address underlying issues that may be contributing to the condition, such as excess weight or insulin resistance, promote ovulation and improve fertility.

Helpful dietary and lifestyle interventions include:

  • Reducing your intake of processed foods and beverages. These include takeout, packaged foods, chips, biscuits, cakes, sodas, etc.

  • Replacing dairy with plant-based alternatives to reduce inflammation.

  • Nourishing your body with wholefoods and make sure you're eating enough. You need a combination of healthy carbs, fats and proteins.

  • Regularly engaging in exercise you enjoy. Aim for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.

  • Reducing exposure to exogenous toxins such as pesticides and drink bottles or plastic containers containing BPA.

  • Ensuring you're getting enough sunlight per day to stabilise vitamin D levels. Aim for at least 10-30 minutes outdoors.

Herbal medicines and compounds are also an invaluable tool in the management of PCOS. Some herbs, which can be prescribed by your naturopath, indicated for PCOS are Actaea racemosa, Vitex agnus-castus, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Paeonia lactiflora.
