Managing Hay Fever

Allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever, is an inflammatory reaction affecting approximately 1 in 5 Australians. It is triggered when allergens, such as fur, dust, pollen or mould, are inhaled. The immune system produces antibodies in defence of these allergens, promoting the production of inflammatory chemicals which cause the flu-like symptoms commonly observed, including congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, sore throat and sneezing. Depending on the individual, hay fever can be experienced seasonally or year-round with symptoms varying from mild to severe.

Other than the triggers mentioned, there are several other factors that can aggravate the condition, including:

  • Spring pollination

  • Heat and dry weather

  • Windy conditions

  • Coffee

  • Alcohol

  • Cigarette smoke

  • Perfume and fragrances

  • Foods such as chocolate, sugar, wheat, peanuts and processed products

When managing hay fever, the short term goal is to clear the acute infection and provide relief from symptoms. In the long term, the aim is to raise immune function to increase the body's resilience to the allergen.

Helpful dietary and lifestyle interventions include:

  • Adopting a Mediterranean-style diet full of nourishing vegetables, fruits, grains and quality sources of protein.

  • Consuming vitamin C rich foods daily. This includes capsicum, citrus, broccoli and brussel sprouts.

  • Avoiding or limiting mucous-forming and inflammatory foods such as dairy, chocolate, red meat, alcohol, wheat and fried foods.

  • Ensuring your home is mould- free and well-ventilated.

  • Steam inhalation with 2-5 drops of peppermint essential oil.

Herbal medicines and compounds are also an invaluable tool in the management of hay fever. Some herbs, which can be prescribed by your naturopath, indicated for hay fever are echinacea, chamomile, marshmallow root and skullcap.
