Herbal Spotlight: Tribulus

Botanically known as Tribulus terrestris, this herb is most commonly known in the athletic community for increasing strength and muscle mass. It has been used in traditional Eastern European and Iranian medicine as an aphrodisiac, while Ayurvedic practitioners have used it in the treatment of male and female reproductive disorders.

What Are Its Benefits?

Tribulus is known to increase sexual well-being in both men and women. The exact mechanism of action is unknown however, it does enhance the brains androgen receptor density, increasing the libido-enhancing properties of androgens. Some of its effects include increasing sexual desire, reducing erectile dysfunction and improving fertility.

In animal studies, the herb appears to enhance resilience to physical and emotional stress and protect the liver and kidneys from oxidation. Its chemical constituent, tribulosin, has been found to have cardioprotective effects.

It is suggested to increase muscle mass and reduce exercise-induced muscle damage however, more randomised control trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.

Who’s It For?

It is most widely prescribed in male reproductive conditions such as impotence, erectile dysfunction, low libido and low sperm count, and menopause and irregular ovulation, such as PCOS, in women. Further, it is indicated in people who suffer from depression, insomnia, liver disorders and in the prevention of heart disease.

Athletes may benefit from its purported ability to increase strength and muscle mass.

Is It Safe To Use?

Tribulus is safe to use in most people however, it may cause abdominal discomfort and menstrual pain in some women. It should be avoided in pregnancy and people with androgen-sensitive tumours.
