Managing Endometriosis
Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial tissue in areas of the body other than the wall of the uterus, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and ovarian tissue. The cause of endometriosis is not well understood however, theories include oestrogen excess and environmental toxins.
Signs and symptoms can be vast and no two people experience the same set of symptoms. Common signs include:
Painful periods
Pain with intercourse
Excessive menstrual bleeding
Spotting inbetween periods
Abdominal pain and bloating
Fatigue
Vaginal discomfort
Infertility
The goal of treatment is to address risk and exacerbating factors, normalise oestrogen levels, reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms. This can be done via herbal formulas and supplements prescribed by your naturopath in combination with the following dietary and lifestyle interventions.
Dietary Tips
Eliminate or reduce alcohol consumption to a maximum of 2 standard servings per week.
Add 1/2 tsp of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper to meals daily to aid in the reduction of inflammation.
Consume 1 cup of dark leafy greens (kale, rocket, etc) with lunch and dinner to improve elimination pathways.
Consume 1 or more servings of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, etc) with lunch and dinner to aid in the clearance of endogenous oestrogen.
Lifestyle Interventions
Avoid using tampons and replace with sanitary pads or reusable products to reduce dioxin exposure.
Refrain from performing intense physical activity during menstruation.
Engage in physical activity 3x/week to reduce oestrogen levels. This can be anything you enjoy e.g. strength training, running, yoga, cycling, boxing, etc.
