The Health Benefits of Early Morning Sun Exposure
Sunlight exposure not only feels good, but it also has numerous benefits for our health and well-being. From boosting mood and energy levels to regulating the circadian rhythm and improving vitamin D levels, you may be surprised at just how powerful the sun's rays can be.
Exposure to sunlight in the morning helps to regulate the body’s internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is a natural 24-hour cycle that regulates sleep, wakefulness, and other physiological processes. When it is disrupted, it can lead to issues such as insomnia, daytime drowsiness, and jet lag. Exposure to bright light in the morning can help to reset the circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality.
The circadian rhythm is controlled by a part of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), located in the hypothalamus. The SCN receives signals from the eyes about the amount and timing of light exposure, which helps to synchronise the circadian rhythm with the day-night cycle.
Studies have shown that early morning sun exposure not only improves sleep timing and quality but also improves mood, energy levels and alertness by stimulating the production of serotonin. Serotonin is also a precursor to melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Increased serotonin levels can help to promote feelings of calmness and relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep while also reducing anxiety and depression.
Lastly, exposure to sunlight is the most effective way for the body to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps to regulate calcium absorption, maintain bone health, and support immune function, while a deficiency of this vitamin is linked to a wide range of health problems, including osteoporosis, diabetes, and cancer.
To maximise the benefits of morning sunlight exposure, it is recommended to get outside within the first hour of waking up and spend at least 15-30 minutes outdoors. Be sure to protect the skin from UV damage by wearing good quality sunscreen.
