Herbal Spotlight: Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is my most asked about herb so I thought it was about time I write a blog post about it.
Botanically known as Withania somnifera, the herb is native to India and parts of the Middle East and Africa. It has been utilised for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a regenerative tonic to reduce stress, increase energy and improve cognition. In Sanskrit, ashwagandha means “smell of the horse”, referring to the herbs earthy scent and ability to increase virility and strength.
What Are Its Benefits?
Ashwagandha is a well-researched herb and has been noted to have potent anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. It’s one of the most widely used adaptogens, which means it helps the body adapt to both external and internal stressors, seemingly by reducing levels of cortisol in the body.
Clinical studies have shown positive effects in the treatment of male infertility, sexual dysfunction, fatigue induced by chemotherapy, arthritic pain relief and nervous disorders including; stress, anxiety, insomnia and cognitive dysfunction.
It was recently discovered that supplementation of the herb may result in increased muscle mass and strength, making it a potent tool to use alongside strength training.
Who’s It For?
The herb is an all-rounder and is prescribed in conditions of anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, stress and other nervous disorders, menopause, anaemia, anorexia, the supportive treatment of cancer and chemotherapy, impotence, PMS, and so much more.
It can aid athletes in increasing strength and muscle mass, as well as overcoming overtraining issues resulting in excess cortisol, sleep issues and memory impairment.
Is It Safe?
Ashwagandha is a generally safe herb, however, it is not suitable for everyone. It is cautioned in individuals suffering from peptic ulcer disease and high dosages may likely result in gastrointestinal upset, vomiting and diarrhoea. It may interact with tranquillisers and immunosuppressant drugs so it’s always best to consult with a naturopath before taking any herbs to determine the right dosages for you and their suitability to your condition.
