Adaptogens: Herbal Stress Relievers

If you’ve been in the wellness world for quite some time you’ve probably come across the term ‘adaptogen’. Adaptogens are a group of herbs that regulate the hypothalamic, pituitary and adrenal glands to mitigate the stress response and in turn, help us ‘adapt’ to stress - whether it be psychological, environmental or physical.

I know what you may be thinking - are they legit or are they another ‘superfood’ type trend?

Many studies have been conducted on the efficacy of adaptogens and have found various mechanisms of action that account for their anti-stress effects. They mainly work by regulating the production of stress hormone, cortisol, and by modulating the synthesis of proteins involved in stress resistance.

Research conducted on adaptogen, Rhodiola rosea, found consumption significantly alleviated stress-induced fatigue, depression, headaches and insomnia. Similarly, these effects were observed in both Schisandra chinensis and Eleutherococcus senticosus

Nature has blessed us with a variety of herbal adaptogens, each with specific compounds that help us naturopaths hone in on and address the different ways in which stress manifests in an individual.

For example, Rhodiola rosea contains active compound, Salidroside, which possesses powerful neuroprotective activity, making it an amazing adaptogen for stress-induced mental fatigue, while Schisandra chinensis contains schisandrin B, a compound shown to enhance mitochondrial antioxidant status, minimising premature ageing as a result of stress.

So, which adaptogen is right for you?

I’d recommend consulting with a naturopath to find out. While many adaptogens are readily available online and in stores, many people lack the knowledge of how these adaptogens influence the body, whether they interact with certain medications or supplements and whether or not they’re a safe and suitable option for you. Plus, adaptogens aren’t cheap! So you want to make sure you’re getting the right ones for you before forking out that cash.
