5 Steps To Holistically Healthier Hair

It’s a symbol of beauty, a form of self-expression and can even alter our mental well-being. Can you guess what it is?

While we all have uniquely different hair types, these 5 tips are sure to work for everyone.

Step one: Regularly consume nutrient-dense foods

The first and most important step to healthy hair is through food! A diet rich in whole plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes and grains is essential for healthy hair, as well as a healthy body. Protein, vitamins, omega 3’s and other minerals are essential for maintaining strong hair follicles, reducing breakage and providing that lustrous shine that's so eagerly sought after. For tips on how to easily incorporate these foods into your day, check out my blog post “How To Create A Balanced Meal”.

Step two: Massage the scalp

Regularly massaging the scalp can improve blood flow and oxygen circulation while reducing product build-up. My favourite way to do this is by applying shampoo whilst in the shower and brushing my scalp with a soft silicone comb.

Step three: Supplement in areas you may be lacking

While vegans and vegetarians are at higher risk of omega-3 deficiency, many people following restrictive diets may not be getting enough of this hair-nourishing nutrient. Other vitamins and minerals that may be lacking include iron, biotin, protein, zinc and B vitamins. It’s always best to get these nutrients from food, however, if that’s not always possible, supplementing is the next best option.

Step four: Reduce heat exposure

Heat styling tools are one of the biggest culprits to damaged hair. Chronic exposure to high heat alters the hair’s protein bonds, leading to a loss of elasticity and breakage. Limit the use of heat styling tools and when in use always protect the hair with heat-protectant products.

Step five: Rule out the possibility of underlying diseases and disorders

Some disorders may contribute to accelerated hair loss. These include, but are not limited to; amenorrhea (the loss of menstruation), high androgens, hyperthyroidism, chronic stress and exposure to radiation.

If you’re experiencing abnormal amounts of hair fall or are suddenly suffering from dry hair with tonnes of breakage, it’s best to consult with a trusted healthcare professional that can work with you to detect the causes and formulate a treatment plan to overcome these challenges. If that’s you, get in touch as I’d love to help you!
