3 Fundamentals of Healthy Skin
We know by now that the skin is the largest organ of the human body. It functions as a protector between the external world and internal organs, filtering toxins, UV radiation and environmental pollutants. This is why it’s important to exercise techniques to look after the skin while maintaining a healthy complexion.
Protect From UV Damage
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the greatest causes of premature skin ageing. Chronic exposure causes DNA damage, resulting in visible hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles. More severely, it can increase the risk of more serious ailments like inflammation and cancer. Protecting the skin from UV damage not only leads to healthier-looking skin but also protects the body from chronic disease. Whether it’s sunny or gloomy outside, make it a habit each morning to apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to the face and exposed areas of the body.
Consume a Variety of Micronutrients
I’ve spoken in depth about the importance between nutrition and healthy skin in my very first published article “The Link Between Skin Ageing & Nutrition” and “6 Nutrients For Youthful Skin”. Consuming a variety of nutrients through fresh fruits and vegetables is the best way to ensure you’re providing your skin with the fuel it needs to thrive, paying particular attention to vitamins A, E, C and D, as well as polyphenols and essential fatty acids. Top your meals with fresh herbs and seeds and mix in a cup of dark leafy greens to boost your nutrient intake.
Cleanse Daily
As the day progresses, toxins, pollutants and bacteria build up on the skin. It’s essential to cleanse every night to remove these impurities, as well as makeup, to promote a radiant complexion and reduce the likelihood of breakouts, blocked pores and premature ageing. Opt for a cleanser that suits your natural skin type and always follow up with a nourishing moisturiser.
